Chronic absenteeism in Oklahoma City Public Schools

The new A-F report cards proposed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education will have several changes to the way schools have been scored in pervious years. One of those changes is to trade out the traditional metric of attendance for chronic absenteeism, which measures how many children miss 10 percent or more school days in an academic year. For Oklahoma City Public Schools, that would be 17 or more days out of school.

Oklahoma Watch took a look at chronic absenteeism.

In Oklahoma City, the lowest rate is at Hawthorne Elemetnary, which has 6 percent. The highest rate is at Captiol Hill High School, which has 51 percent chronically absent students. The 11 OKCPS schools with the highest rates are all high schools, and nationally, high schools are more likely to have chronic absenteeism, according to Oklahoma Watch.

Here's a look at the rates in District 3:
  • Adams Elementary - 18 percent
  • Buchanana Elementary - 10 percent
  • Cleveland Elementary - 8 percent
  • Jackson Enterprise Elementary - 28 percent
  • Kaiser Elementary - 14 percent
  • Linwood Elementary - 7 percent
  • Mark Twain Elementary - 14 percent
  • Pierce Elementary - 11 percent
  • Rockwood Elementary - 20 percent
  • Westwood Elementary - 12 percent
  • Taft Middle School - 27 percent
  • Northwest Classen High School - 36 percent
